Professionalism is not the problem here. "The fault, dear Brutus lies not in our [political] stars, but in ourselves."

- Voter pandering is what every politician does. It's the voters' fault if they demand pork for their votes.

- Hiring family using campaign donations is perfectly legal and ethical. It's just like hiring family to help with your business. It's not tax money.

- Bribery is already illegal, and any politician is susceptible to it, professional or not.

If you forbid people from being full-time politicians, only the people rich enough to take time off to be part-time politicians will do it.

I'm sorry but i just have to respond the first answer. If we're talking about getting rid of paying our elected officials because they have money already, that would only make things worse for the middle and lower class because the only ones that could afford to become politicians WOULD be the rich, and thus we aren't solving the problem in the first place. No family/candidate could afford to become a politician if that was the case...no matter if they had some of the greatest ideas for reforms. What you're suggesting is just an AWFUL idea!!!!!!

You'll end up with a system where only the very rich can hold office. American politicians aren't paid that much to begin with -- certainly a lot less than they would make as "lobbyists", financiers, or even lawyers. And, contrary to popular opinion, they are among the lowest paid politicians in the world. Limiting public office to those who can independently support themselves would undermine the meritocratic aspects of our system.

Besides, just because someone has an "independent" source of income, that does not mean that the person will have no incentives to abuse his office. At the very least, he will have the incentive to promote those business interests that are behind that "independent" source of income. Even someone living off interest on bonds will have an incentive to bend over backwards for the sake of the banking industry.

Eliminate pay for all elected positions. These millionaires can afford not to be paid for 2 years in the House or 6 years in the Senate. But that will automatically want them to not serve for TOO long.
