What are the legal reprecussions for not paying a fine assessed by a private company?

I work near a train station and the location of my parking lot makes it convenient to walk through the train station on my way to work. This morning, I crossed the tracks on a pedestrian walkway right in front of a parked train. According to the Amtrak guy that was harassing me, crossing at an unsafe pedestrian walkway (I don’t believe him that it was unsafe, but I suppose that doesn’t matter) is a $450 fine. I refused to show him my ID; as far as I’m concerned, without a police badge, I’m not identifying myself. In fact, if he really planned to press the issue, I was just going to run for it. Thankfully, he let me off with a warning so I didn’t have to pay (or fight) the fine.

Anyway, I can see how there could be financial repercussions if the company sent me to collections for an unpaid fine, but is it really against the law? In my mind, there’s a difference between a police citation and an Amtrak fine, but I don’t know how the law sees it.
